As Concern grows for maintaining and improving the quality of the environment, organsations of all sizes are increasingly turning their attention to the potential environmental impacts of their activities, products or services. The environmental performance requires organisational commitment to a systematic approach and to continual improvement of the Environmental Management System (EMS).
An EMS provides order and consistency for organisations to address environmental concers through the allocation of resources, assignment of responsibilities, and ongoing evaluation of practices, procedures and processes.
Such a system is essential to an organisation's ability to anticipate and meet its environmental objectives and to ensure ongoing compliance with national and/or international requirements.
Environmental management is an integral part of an organisation's overall management system. The design of an EMS is an ongoing and interactive process. The structure, responsibilities, practices, procedures, processes and resources for implementing environmental policies, objectives and targets can be coordinated with existing efforts in other areas, for example, occupational health and safety, quality and finance.
Environmental management systems implemented by organisations cover a variety of approaches and vary markedly.
There is not one best way to proceed with the implementation of an environmental management system, anf there is no system that is applicable to every organisation.
Whether the environmental management system is based on a model such as the ISO series of standards, the EMAS regulation, or is developed to meet the unique needs of an organisation, its use is a strategic business decision.
