Identification and Recording of Legislative and Other Requirements

The identification of legal and other obligations may well have been embedded in the scope of the IER.
To meet the requirements of ISO 14001 the business should :

  • Commit to complying with legal and other requirements in the environmental policy;
  • Have a procedure to identify and have been access to its legal and other requirements;
  • Keep this information up to date;
  • Consider legal requirements when setting and reviewing environmental objectives and targets;
  • Establish and maintain procedures to ensure legal compliance;
  • Ensure employees are aware of how to meet legal obligations in relation to the environmental management system; and
  • Develop a procedure for periodically evaluating legal compliance.
Sources of Information

Legislation for environmental issues may apply under a number of jurisdictions : international, federal, state and local.
Sources of information on environmental legislation include :
  • National or regulatory authorities;
  • Trade and professional institutions and associations;
  • Privately or publicly published compendiums and data bases;
  • Internet;
  • Government book shops / printers;
  • Legal companies with specialist environmental expertise; and
  • University departments.
